When we talk about MASTERY…

About GREATNESS in anything…

It involves a number of things….

The first thing that is encountered on this path is:

 

FRUSTRATION and PAIN

 

These two things are amplified in our little world of club soccer for a number of reasons…

But first, let see what is developed slowly to handle the frustration and pain…

Grit and resilience…

The ability to keep showing up, and keep working on the skills and tactical understanding needed for greatness…

And greatness, without a high level of grit doesn’t exist…

Grit is foundational to athletic, academic, career…

To every type of success…

Let’s take a quick look at the pain and frustration that every player deals with, and quickly the two main ways that athletes deal with pain…

 

CLUB SOCCER – THE MAGNIFIER

 

In the U.S. we take something that is supposed to be fun, and amplify the least important part of development, to where the fun…

Well, it often becomes lost in translation…

Parents yelling at refs, parents bragging about 12 year olds winning, coaches under huge pressures to win early…

And for the player, what happens when they see this…

When they hear this…

When they FEEL this…

It stifles that creativity…

It pigeon-holes development…

I get athletes who tell me all the time when they are 12:

I Play X position…

 

REALLY?

 

Ummm, who cares?

Seriously, who cares?

You have NO CLUE what position you play at 12.

Sorry, but the ONLY thing that matters at 12 is making sure you are developing ALL the skills.

Of course, you want to perform well on Saturdays…

But honestly, when kids get pigeon-holed early, and therefore never learn to dribble creatively..

Never learn to shoot…

Never have expectations to learn the off foot…

It is just heart-breaking…

At 12 you play soccer…

On Saturdays you may line up a defender, but you aren’t a defender…

Until you are well into the later teen years, we will probably have no idea what you will play…

Growth, explosiveness after weights are introduced, mindset, tactical IQ, speed of play…

All keep developing.

 

GRIT

This is why the #1 trait, when asked, that I say great athletes have…

Is GRIT.

Do you have the ability to keep working those skills?

Keep working your body to forge it into YOUR ideal body for soccer?

Keep working those books to keep those grades where they need to be?

It is all connected…

Think your multiplication tables are annoying?

Try working through pages of complex algebra doing integrations…

Think juggling is annoying?

Try opening a hole big enough to get a quality shot off against World Cup level defenders…

Ask Germany how that ability is working out for them…

And German is my team.

But they got what they deserved, if they cannot figure out a final 3rd offense…

Go home…

Try again…

Thanks for playing…

But, here is the deal…

They will go home…

And, they will figure it out.

How do I know?

 

WHAT PAIN REVEALS

Pain clarifies so much if it is felt at appropriate levels…

If the pressure is too high, we see athletes retreat…

Build up defenses, or shy from creativity and rely on a small set of skills…

Because whenever they try something new, they cannot take the pain of failing…

So, back to old reliable…

A player tries a new move that they have been working on, and it fails, and what happens?

Coach throw arms up…

Parents groan…

Other players, seeing this and form opinions on what will happen if they are creative…

And they pull back in…

 

Now, I’m not supporting a ‘triple flip-flap, paddy whack, give your dog a quadruple scissor elastic sole role’ thing right in front of the goal…

You know, like you saw on the viral YouTube video…

That made the ball watching, running full speed forward style defender’s ankles break…

Yep, that ‘move’…

 

But, how different would things be if players who try something new heard ‘hey that’s OK, I love that you are being creative!’

It creates a culture where PAIN is dampened with support…

Because PAIN reveals gaps in knowledge and skills…

So, PAIN must be embraced, and dealt with…

EVERY.

SINGLE.

DAY.

Failure.

Experimenting.

Developing every weakness.

Working on things that DRIVE YOU COOKOO!

Haha…

 

JUGGLING AS EXAMPLE

For younger players, one of the most frustrating skills is JUGGLING.

Wow!  I am getting this!

I hate this!

I will never get this!

Go shoot a bunch of balls, and do simple things you already know how to do…

This shows low levels of GRIT

And high levels of PAIN and FRUSTRATION avoidance…

It is a glimpse into the future…

Deal with that feeling…

Develop the GRIT required…

Make small goals…

Crush them…

Keep yourself motivated…

GRIT.
