Speed of Play vs Speed of Foot

HELLO RENEGADE!

It is a term that we hear so often…

1st Touch…

Speed of Play…

I often kid around with players…

‘Why do in 2 touches what you can do in 5?’

They immediately know that they received the ball without previously scanning the field…

Tunnel vision.

So when the ball arrived, they…

a) got it under control in 1 or 2 touches…

b) often then took 1 or 2 touches to turn upfield…

c) then looked up…

d) then touched over to their dominant foot…

e) then passed the ball…

Gross.

This is why 1st Touch training is so vital…

But once the CONTROL aspect of 1st Touch is mastered, then it is vital to really emphasize intent…

What did you need from that 1st Touch?

– Did you need to open your hips and threaten an approaching defender all in a single touch..?

– Did you need to one-time it right back to the passer due to pressure?

– Did you need to one-time it to a teammate who is showing tot he ball?

– Did you need to one-time it to yourself into space to relieve pressure or increase rate of play?

But, none of these are possible without vision and knowing what is going on…

Plus, you MUST have confidence that the ball is going to come off your foot EXACTLY where you want it…

Not having the ball pop up to knee height on the 1st Touch…

Not having the ball get trapped under you so you fumble and goober it all up…

Not needing the ball to stay tight, but having it ricochet away from you…

Gross.

Seriously…

All this fancy nonsense, and private this and that training…

A ball.

A wall.

Repeat after me…

A ball.

A wall.

This week Coach Cody showed a few simple 1st Touches off a wall in his Tekker Tuesday.

If you missed it, check it out HERE.

Here’s a hint:

Every Star Touch can be a 1st Touch off the wall.

: )

You’re welcome!

But here is why 1st Touch is so important:

Because the ball does the work…

Yes, there are Messi and Ronaldo…

But, if you don’t possess great speed, then you MUST work on your speed of play.

This is so incredibly vital…

Ball speed can create mismatches as easily as foot speed can…

Maybe easier when combined with creativity off the ball….

Plus, speed of play keeps you on the field…

It is the ‘meat and potatoes’ of the game.

Constantly scanning, always knowing what you are going to do before the ball arrives…

Efficiency…

1, 2, maybe 3 touches unless you are taking space or beating defenders…

Let the ball work…

And you work when you don’t have the ball…

Next practice, I challenge you to really keep focused on keeping your head on a swivel…

And making your 1st Touch intentional…

Play with intent.

The great ones always do…

Always.

Hope this helps!

As always, thank you for being a RENEGADE!!!
